There are a million ways to get to sleep for people who can’t get to sleep. Some use pills, or alcohol,  others use all kinds of other methods. Some methods are more effective than others, and some are less harmful than others.

Very often many of us can’t get to sleep due to anxiety, thinking about the past or the future, or not being able to relax “trying too hard to get to sleep.”

I would like to share a simple actionable method which I can’t guarantee will send you to sleep within 60 seconds, but will definitely work in the long run to make things better, sooner or later and bring you a fantastic night of comfortable sleep. May be soon you will even be able to fall asleep in less 60 seconds if you persist and practice without interruption every night.

Here’s the method:

Lie down in bed. Relax and let go of all the tensions. Relax more. Smile to yourself.

Then, think of something that starts with “A” and be grateful for.

Say to yourself, “I am grateful for the “Apple pie” that mum (or my daughter or the bakery) made for me. Pause and feel deeply the gratitude.

Then I am grateful for this comfortable “Bed”.

Go down the list, and for most people they would have fallen asleep well before they reach Z, or even G

Why does it work? For simple reasons:

  1. When we are grateful, we discard our dissatisfaction at something or someone, and instead focus on acknowledging and observing something we have taken for granted and create a feeling of satisfaction or contentment.
  2. When we are grateful we discard the need to focus on changing ourselves, someone else or the world, but instead allow the positive seeds inside us to grow. And delight in ourselves and the world around us. We simply observe something that is already “right”, rather than focus on something that’s “wrong”.
  3. When we are grateful we observe and focus on the present moment, right here, rather than having our mind run to the future with worries or go to the past with regrets, but instead simply enjoy whatever there is here and now.

As Stephen Hawking famously said, “ if you feel you are in a black hole, don’t give up–there is a way out”. If Stephen Hawking who was as paralysed as he was, was able to express gratitude every day, so we can learn a lesson from him and not underestimate ourselves……………our ability to relax, get back to happiness and a good night’s sleep.

What I have given you is a tried and tested method, but it only works if you do it consistently and trust the process. Zero harm trusting it—–there is no monetary costs or side effect costs.

Enjoy your new “sleeping pill”. Tell me how it goes.
