It’s Labour Day, let’s celebrate…..

Today (Labour Day), 1st of May, is a public holiday in many countries in Asia and Europe.

I did a little “market survey” this morning. I checked out a friend who is the factory manager of a company which  employ a large number of workers. Real workers.. He has literally thousands of them.

He told me that his factory is opened as normal as today electricity costs are 50% of a normal day, so the company decided to stay open to take advantage of that. Their thousands of workers have to go to work on “Labour Day”.

My other close friends in town and in Europe. They are not manual or factory workers. They are “white collars” folks. But they are having a day off on “Labour Day”.

I then did another quick market survey of my friends, and as you have guessed, none of them know what “Labour Day” is about.  But they are happy to have a holiday.

From the internet, I learnt that International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day or Workers’ Day in some countries, and often referred to as May Day, is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement which occurs every year on May Day (1 May), an ancient European spring festival.”

I am now wondering, in this new age of AI and 24 hour interconnectivity between the 7 billion of us, more and more of whom don’t have a “job” that we can hang onto for longer than couple of years, does the idea of “Labour Day” still have much significance?

I am curious, would many people object if “Labour Day” is changed to “White Collar Day” from 2019….?
